An anniversary novelty in a case made of innovative material.
Watchmakers love milestone dates. In 2017, Longines marked its 185th anniversary, IWC Schaffhausen launched special models for its 150th anniversary in 2018, the Zenith El Primero chronograph celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019, the same year the Omega Seamaster marked its 70th anniversary, and 2020 was dedicated to TAG Heuer's 160th anniversary. In 2021, we have another glorious anniversary to look forward to — the 230th anniversary of Girard-Perregaux.
The manufacture has gone into 2021 looking surprisingly bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and presented innovative materials and ways to interact with clients. The company didn’t waste time wistfully reminiscing about days gone by, resting on its laurels. In January, Girard-Perregaux unveiled the Laureato Absolute Wired model.
The first thing that attracts attention is its use of modern materials, with the Carbon Glass introduced in 2019. The engineers combine layers of carbon fiber and fiberglass, which are then subjected to high temperatures and pressure to create the 44 mm case. This approach means that no two limited edition pieces are the same, of which there are 88.
And all of the owners will be pleased to know that each of them will receive a watch with uniquely aligned strata. This also includes the pattern on the electric-blue bezel. The materials may be new, but the watch has held onto Laureato's instantly recognizable octagonal silhouette, which dates back to 1975. By the way, Carbon Glass doesn't just create an original appearance. The case is exceptionally light and durable: the novelty weighs only 94 grams.
The designers have complemented the carbon glass with PVD-treated titanium, and the watch is worn on a rubber strap with a Cordura fabric effect. Housed inside the novelty is the Caliber GP03300-1058 automatic manufacture movement. The Laureato Absolute Wired will be sold exclusively via the e-commerce platform, with the launch of the online sales platform available to clients in in the UK and the US.
